What Is ADHD?
ADHD stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. It is a condition which affects some 3 to 5 per cent of all children.
People are exposed to stimuli and signals all the time. Most people are able to filter this input and focus only on important information. People with ADHD are far less adept at filtering out unimportant stimuli. Their brains have difficulty processing information, and so they constantly feel overwhelmed.
The diagnosis of ADHD is generally made by a medical specialist (e.g. a paediatrician, child or adolescent psychiatrist or paediatric neurologist), by means of extensive examination and discussions with the patient, his parents, family members and teachers.
